Some people never learn

As a first response to Shel Silverstein's poem, "Peanut-Butter Sandwich," my initial response was 'some people never learn.' The poem is about a king that will only eat peanut-butter sandwichs. His clothes were covered with the mounds of peanut butter and jelly. But he took a bite of a sandwich one day, and his mouth got stuck! It took twenty years to get his mouth opened, and the first thing he said was 'How about a peanut butter sandwich.' When I read this, it had the desired effect. I thought that he was so stupid and conceited, he had the whole town working to get his mouth open, he was probably starving, and all he could say was he wanted a peanut butter sandwich? How about some water, or some hot soup? Why don't you just get your mouth stuck again? The kings tone was very royally stupid. He thought that just because he was the king he could get his mouth shut again and his subjects would get it open again. So the poem was well written, as it caused feelings of pity and facepalming in my mind.

  1. I agree. I read this poem and found it to be very strange, and the King was especially stupid.
