Life ain't no crystal stair

In the poem “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes, it is a short poem talking about life.  The main type of figurative language that he uses is metaphors. Almost every line is a start of a new metaphor or a continuing one from the last line. He’s talking about two different ways your life can go. You’re life can be a “crystal stair,” which means nothing will ever go wrong and you have nothing to worry about, or a torn-up staircase with splinters, nails, and broken boards. What does this staircase mean? Every single tack and broken splinter on that staircase will show some place that tried to stop you, a hardship. A death, a hard relationship. The tone of the mother to the son in this poem is very calm, perhaps a little weary. When I was done reading this poem, I thought the mood was a very new look on life. His metaphors work really well to express this mood.
