Prediction for Speak

I’m reading the book Speak, and I think the girl Melinda is going to undergo some changes in her school life. She’s a loner, for a reason. At an end-of-summer party thrown by some older students, something happens to her and she calls the police on the party. When school starts, she is thrown nasty looks from people she doesn’t even know. She had friends, but every one of them is ignoring her, because she crashed one of the biggest parties in high school history. But I think slowly she will gain them back, at least a few. She will make new friends, and find a ‘clan’ to be with until high school ends.
This is definitely a comedy. There is no doubt in my mind that this will turn out all right for Melinda. It may not be completely perfect at the end, but she will hold her head higher, stand a little taller, and finally speak out loud.
This book is a lot like Hollis Woods, from Pictures of Hollis Woods. This is because both characters are withdrawn from the world and don’t like being in the spotlight. These books are really alike also with the fact that they both have flashbacks to their failed pasts, but both of them have to face it eventually. They end happily, because they both face their fears and horrible pasts and make them right, or forget about them.
I think Melinda is a dynamic character, but she won’t change overnight. At a snail’s pace she’ll become friendlier to some people, more willing to try things, and better at thinking things through before doing them. The thing that’s going to be really slow figuring out is who IT is. I think the reason she called the police had something to do with him.
