Themes are something that the author decides. It can be sad, happy, or adventurous. In The Pearl, the theme is definitely greed. He has tried for years get by on small pearls they can sell for less than they are worth. So when he finds a huge pearl at the bottom of the ocean, it was like he was holding heaven in his hands. But this little piece of heaven would cause more harm than good.
When he dove down into the depths of the ocean, he didn’t expect to find anything special to help their family. He thought he would find a small pearl that wouldn’t even pay for a full meal for him, his wife and his son Coyotito. But what he got was a gift and a curse. The largest pearl in the entire ocean was in his hands. This would turn out to be a disaster. Greed is like a poisoned apple. It will look delicious and perfect from the outside, but on the inside it’s twisted, cold-hearted, and relentless. But because of the perfectness on the outside it is usually taken by desperate people that need something to change their lives. And greed will. But not in the way they expect.
Greed is a monster that takes the victim whole, but takes its time to chew them up and twist them in ways they can’t escape from. It may never spit them out. Only the strongest can escape the cruel clutches of greed. Kino escaped, but not unhurt. His only love, his son, was shot by people who still haven’t escaped the greed monster.
