The Giver : Color

Color is one of the wonders of the world in my opinion. It gives us a description on any item, because if you’re trying to describe a new item to your friend, you can say, “It’s blue, and it’s small, and…” they’ll understand pretty well how that object looks.

I don’t think that getting rid of color solved anything because all of the blue-eyed kids are frustrated and confused because the other kids don’t understand it. All the Receivers can see color, and every single one thinks that they shouldn’t have gone to Sameness eventually. Color is what makes the world unique and special. If I lived in this community, that would not be fun, because there isn’t even the color gray, because in the book it describes an apple that doesn’t even have a shade. Plus, it means everyone has to look and dress the same as each other, so there’s no individuality in this community. The only thing that makes you different is your job. In our world it’s the color of your skin, the color of your clothes and everything else that makes you unique.

Color is the staple of our life. Imagine if you had to wake up every day and put on the same dull shade for your clothes. When I read this book, it makes me feel lucky that I get to experience the thing we take for granted known as color.
